Nam Hinboun River Expedition

(4 days trekking, kayaking and long tail boat, all seasons)

Hin Boun

Explore the imposing limestone mountain caves and rivers of Khammouane. Spend four days trekking and boating in remote countryside, exploring archaeological sites, caves and forest trails.

Itinerary:
Day 1: Tha Khek - Ban Nahin

From Green Discovery Laos office in Thakhek, we drive past the imposing limestone mountains of Khammouane to the Lao Loum village of Ban Na Hin where we start trekking through old growth forest to get to the Nasanam Waterfall. Picnic lunch is served at the base of the waterfall. There is time to relax, swim, and enjoy sightseeing around the falls. We return to Ban Na Hin where we spend the night in guesthouse.

Approximately: 2 hours transfer from Thakhek and 4 hours from Vientiane/ 1½ hour trekking

Day 2: Ban Nahim - Ban Kean
The morning starts on the Nam Hinboun River. We begin paddling pass the daunting limestone peaks of the Hinnamno National Protected Area. The park is home to a wide range of rare and threatened mammal species such as Malaysian Sun Bear, Tiger, Pygmy Slow Loris and Gibbons. Along the way we stop to swim and eat our picnic lunch on a sand shoal.

That evening we’ll be the guest of the Lao village Ban Kaen next to the Hinboun River. This village is only accessible by foot or river. Stay in the village lodge.

Approximately: 30 minutes transfer/ 5 hours kayaking

PaddingDay 3: Ban Kean - Ban Nakok
Our day's paddling takes us through some of the most stunning scenery yet, with sheer sided mountains rising to over 900 meters on both sides of the river where we have our lunch.

After a short cruise downstream, we trek through a large cave that forges a path directly through the mountain range. This one kilometer deep cave emerges into a hidden valley to expose ancient temple ruins reclaimed by the jungle. You might wonder who built these temples and why, but today their origins are lost in history. This day is a day of exploration. We spend a relaxing and instructive evening and home stay in a local village or camping along the beach. Be the guest of the Lao village Ban Na Kok along the banks of the river. Stay in the village lodge.

Approximately: 5 hours kayaking/ 2 hours trekking

Day 4: Ban Nakok – Thakhek
After breakfast, we take a 4 hours boat cruise along the Nam Hinboun and have lunch at a local restaurant.

Late in the afternoon we meet our pick up and return to Thakhek.Back to Vientiane

Approximately: 4 hours boat/1 hour transfer to Thakhek and 4 hours to Vientiane
