Follow the coffee from tree to cup

The highlands of the Bolaven Plateau are among the most fertile areas in Laos and they are home to a large number of coffee and tea plantations. The high quality coffee produced here is exported to all over the world. In cooperation with the Association of Coffee Producers in the Bolaven Plateau (AGPC) we will take you to the coffee villages in the plateau and you will learn from the locals how the coffee is processed from cherry to your cup. During the tour, you will get to see beautiful waterfalls and magnificent views of the plateau

1-day Coffee tour

Day 1 We leave Pakse in the morning and head to the highlands of the Bolaven Plateau.

Passing the Plateau’s capital Paksong, we drive to the village Katouat. Many families of the village are coffee farmers who work with the AGPC. We join the farmers for their work on the plantations where we learn how to pick the coffee cherries. The harvesting is done by hand, and only the ripe cherries are picked. With a full basket of cherries we return to the village’s coffee factory where the coffee is pulped, fermented and washed.

We will enjoy lunch with the villagers before we will take the beans to be dried by the sun, which takes up to 25 days depending on the weather. We will see how the dried beans are hulled to become the green beans, which are then sold to France, Germany and Japan. As the last step in the production chain, we roast and grind the green beans – to finally enjoy a delicious cup of the freshest coffee!
In the early afternoon, we will head back towards Pakse and stop by the beautiful waterfall Tat Nyeaung, where we can relax and enjoy a refreshing swim.

On the way back to Pakse, we visit a tea factory
where we observe how the tea, which is grown
in the Plateau, is processed.

We return to Pakse around 6pm.

2-day Coffee tour

This 2-day tour will take you to a remote coffee village located 20 km off the main road where you will experience a unique insight into the world of the Lao coffee farmers. On the way to the village we will pass rice paddies, small rivers and of course coffee plantations. The village, which rarely sees tourists, is located in a beautiful setting with a viewpoint overlooking the whole plateau as far as Pakse and the Mekong Valley.

We will leave Pakse in the morning and drive through the plateau for approximately 1 ½ hours before we arrive in the village. On the way you will get a good impression of the fertility of this area. After arriving in the village, we join the villagers for their work on the coffee plantations. Many families of the village are coffee farmers who work with the AGPC. We join the farmers for their work on the plantations where we learn how to pick the coffee cherries. The harvesting is done by hand, and only the ripe cherries are picked. We spend the evening and the night in the village.
After a nice breakfast which comes with fresh cup of coffee, we will walk to the view point and enjoy the magnificent scenery of the plateau.
We leave the village after lunch to head back towards Pakse. On the way we will stop at the waterfall Tat Nieng, where we can take a swim and relax. Before driving back to Pakse we make a short visit in a tea plantation where we can see how the Bolaven-grown tea is processed.
We return to Pakse in the early evening.
