Nam Ha – Nam Tha Confluences

(4 days: 3 days kayaking/rafting & 1 day long-tail boat)

Nam Tha River

This 4 days tour takes the paddlers down two scenic rivers, before moving up the Mekong towards Thailand in a motor boat. In the forests of the Nam Ha National Protected Area, there's much to learn about the local flora and fauna. Encounters with the diverse ethnic groups of the region are just some of the unique experiences along the way.

Itinerary:
Day 1: Luang Namtha – Ban Nam Ha – Nam Goy

The day of paddling takes us through the thick, in parts old-growth forest of the Nam Ha NPA. A picnic lunch and a refreshing swim mark mid-day. We arrive in the village in the afternoon and take sometimes to look around the village and visit with the inhabitants. In order to distribute the benefit between villagers, trips alternate overnight stays between the lodges of Ban Nam Goy and Ban Nalan Tai (Khmu,) Ban Nam Goy (Lanten). That evening enjoy a typical village dinner cooked over an open fire

Approximately: 1 hour transfer/ 5 hours kayaking

Nam Tha RiverDay 2: Ban Nam Goy – Ban Hat Yawng
After a leisurely breakfast we continue down river. The section of the river will reveal the best forest views and the most exciting rapids of the trip. Arriving at the confluence of the Nam Tha River paddle down the Nam Tha for a way before arriving at the Khmu village of Ban Hat Yawng where the villagers will host you in their lodge.

Approximately: 5 hours kayaking

Day 3: Ban Hat Yawng - Ban Hat Nalaeng
The third day is spent on the Nam Tha River, which flows through a more densely populated and cultivated landscape. Upon reaching Ban Hat Nalaeng, the group is met by a long-tail boat for transport to the host village of Ban Hat Nalaeng for the night.

Approximately: 6 hours kayaking/ 1 hour long tail boat

Day 4: Ban Hat Nalaeng - Houay XaiLong Boat to Huay Xai
The trip to the Mekong valley continues in a slow boat (covered boat) from hill rice to wet rice cultivation indicates the arrival in the lowlands, the cultural area of the Lao Loum.

At the confluence of the Nam Tha and the Mekong, the journey continues north to the border town of Houay Xai. Here you can spend the night in a local guesthouse or travel onward to Thailand. Once arrive in Houy Xai, travel is on your own account.

Approximately: 7 hours long tail boat

Note:
• Nam Ha is best for rafting from July to November, for kayaking from July to December. Low water levels from January – June may make kayaking rocky.
• Nam Tha is best for rafting from July to November, for kayaking all year round
• For this trip, if you switch the itinerary, you can also start from Houay Xai

Green Discovery recognizes that the welfare of our business depends on the welfare of the people, communities and environment around us. It is for that reason that we take extra effort to ensure that benefits from our trips are distributed broadly. Each trip is a bit different but all trips benefit the local economy and contribute to protecting the environment. The guides, drivers, the food and most of the villagers benefit from your presence. Most notably you’ll see that every village we visit not only receives some of the money that you paid for the tour, they also are active business partners in the tour. We also pay $2 per day per person to the National Protected Area and set aside 10% of the above expenses for training of guides, villagers and development of more community-based tourism programs.
