Nam Ha Multi-Sport 1

(1 day trekking, ½ day kayaking/rafting, ½ mountain biking)

Nam Ha

The first day of trekking takes you through 2 Lanten Villages and a Khmu Village. Ban Nalan Tai, a Khmu village, and Ban Nam Goy, a Lanten village, can only be accessed by foot or by boat. This trail climbs a ridge bordering the Nam Ha River and goes through forested areas bordering the Nam Ha Protected Area. Overnight in the village lodge of Ban Nam Goy. On this trip you will learn about the upland agricultural practices, the uses of the forest, and you'll enjoy the hospitality and food of the Lanten. The first day is a day of trekking through forest and the second you spend kayaking down the lower part of the Nam Ha River through the Nam Ha National Protected Area. You will be paddling exciting but manageable 2 to 3 grade rapids. During low water the river becomes quite rocky making kayaking difficult. The return on mountain bikes will be along a rough road along the Namtha River with views of the protected area.

trekkingItinerary:
Day 1: Luang Namtha- Ban Namleu - Ban Nalan - Ban Nam Goy

The trek starts in the village of Ban Namleu, a Lanten village. The trail ascends from Ban Nam Leu to the ridge line. Along the trail we will pass through forest in various stages of regeneration as well as some upland fields. We will meet local villagers along the trail coming from or going to market.
After descending from the ridge down to the village of Ban Nalan Tail on the banks of the Nam Ha, we walk around the village and rest a while before continuing on to Ban Nam Goy. The villagers of Ban Nam Goy will be our hosts for the night.

Approximately: 15 minutes transfer/ 6 hours trekking kayaking

Day 2: Ban Nam Goy - Ban Hut Gong – Luang Namtha
The next day, the river features a number of swift rapids before arriving at the confluence of the Nam Ha and Nam Tha Rivers. Monkeys are often heard and sometimes seen on this stretch of river. But we'll have to be quiet so we don't scare them off.

Reaching to the Namtha River, turn down stream for a bit until we meet the support vehicle. We change to mountain bikes for the afternoon for the return to The Boat Landing Guest House. Ride is along the Namtha River through Khmu and Lanten Villages with the Nam Ha Protected Area on the other side of the river.

Approximately: 1 ½ hour biking/ 5 hours kayaking / 1 hour transport

Note: Nam Ha is best for rafting from July to November, for kayaking from July to December. Low water levels from January – June may make kayaking rocky.

Green Discovery recognizes that the welfare of our business depends on the welfare of the people, communities and environment around us. It is for that reason that we take extra effort to ensure that benefits from our trips are distributed broadly. Each trip is a bit different but all trips benefit the local economy and contribute to protecting the environment. The guides, drivers, the food and most of the villagers benefit from your presence. Most notably you’ll see that every village we visit not only receives some of the money that you paid for the tour, they also are active business partners in the tour. We also pay $2 per day per person to the National Protected Area and set aside 10% of the above expenses for training of guides, villagers and development of more community-based tourism programs.
