This 1 day trek is ideal for someone who wants to do some trail hiking, see different types of agriculture and mixed forest and visit a variety of nearby ethnic groups. The tour has an easy and a more challenging option. The tour starts on the broad open rice fields of the Namtha Valley at the Lanten Village of Ban Nam Dee. It wanders up in to the hills above the valley through a local reserve forest. You will see terraced upland rice paddies and visit the Sida ethnic group, a Tibeto-Burman group which only has two villages in Laos. On the way back return to the starting point of Ban Nam Dee and refresh yourself at the village’s waterfall.

Itinerary: Luang Nam Tha - Ban Nam Dee – Ban Sida – Ban Nam De - Luang Nam Tha
An early start will give us the chance to see and do more along the way. The trip starts at the Lanten Village of Ban Nam Dee. Learn a bit about the village before heading up into the hills. The trail will go through mixed forest, upland fields, terraced paddy and cross streams. For lunch you have the choice of having a picnic in a hut in the rice paddy or eating in the house of one of the village.

In Ban Sida visit with the village and learn a bit about the life of these small ethnic minorities in the hills. Have our guide ask the villagers to tell the story of how they got separated from their relatives by the banana trees growing on the trail. The easy option returns by the same way that you came. The more challenging trail will take you up from Ban Sida along a ridge with expansive views of mountains area before descending through reserve forest. The trip ends at the Lanten village of Ban Nam Dee where you can spend a views minutes resting at the village’s waterfall. The water isn’t deep enough to swim in, but the falls make for a wonderful refreshing shower. Bring clothes to get wet in!

Most notably you’ll see that every village we visit not only receives some of the money that you paid for the tour, they also are active business partners in the tour. We also pay $2 per day per person to the National Protected Area and set aside 10% of the above expenses for training of guides, villagers and development of more community-based tourism programs.
