Nam Ha Valley and Nam Tha River Combination 2

(1 day kayak, 2 days trek, all seasons)

Nam Ha ValleyThe first day tour is for those who want a pleasant day paddling and exploring villages along the banks of the Nam Tha River. Wild life can be seen while paddling.

The following day take us through three Lanten Villages and two Khmu villages. Ban Nalan Tai, a Khmu village, and Ban Nam Goy, a Lanten village, can only be accessed by foot or by boat. This trail climbs a ridge near the Nam Ha River and goes through forested areas bordering the Nam Ha Protected Area. On the second the trail crosses over the Nam Ha River to cut through a section of old growth forest with abundant signs of wildlife before we pass through rice paddies and finally cross the Nam Tha River to Ban Hat Yawng. The overnight stay alternates from trip to trip between Ban Nam Goy or Ban Nalan Tai. On this trip we will learn about the upland agricultural practices, the uses of the forest and we’ll enjoy the hospitality and food of the Lanten.

Itinerary:
Day 1: Luang Namtha - Ban Sope Dute - Ban Sop Sim Noy – Ban Hot Yawng
Nam Ha Valley
The day begins with some basic paddle instruction and equipment familiarization before taking to the river in single or double kayaks. The Nam Tha meanders through changing forest types, inhabited by animals, such as sun bear, tiger and barking deer and a great variety of birds. The border of the Nam Ha Protected Area is reached in the Lanten village of Ban Sope Dute. Various sets of exciting but safe rapids lead up to a lunch break on the riverside.

After a typical Lao picnic, there is time for relaxation and a refreshing swim. The next paddling stretch takes us to the Khmu village of Ban Sop Sim Noy. We continue until reaching Ban Hat Yawng of Khmu village for the night

Approximately: 20 minutes transfer/ 5 hours kayaking or rafting

Day 2: Ban Hat Yawng - Ban Nam Goy
After breakfast, we are ready to trek to Ban Nam Goy. The first 15 minutes trek is passing through rice paddy field. We eventually enter the primary forest of Nam Ha National Park. Here the trail traverses old growth forests, follows streams along which we will notice signs of the abundant wildlife in the area. If we are lucky, we may even see some. Our picnic lunch is served in the forest.

After lunch, we continue 2 more hours trek and then cross the Nam Ha River on a bamboo raft. We hike through the forest along the banks of the Nam Tha. Monkeys have been reported in this area. If we walk quietly and luck is on our side, we may hear them. We arrive to Ban Nam Goy of Lanten for overnight

Approximately: 6 hours trekking

Nam Ha Valley

Note: There are a lot of leeches and the trail is muddy in rainy season along this part of the trek

Day 3: Ban Nam Goy - Ban Namleu - Luang Namtha
The trail ascends from Ban Nam Goy to the ridge line. Along the trail we will pass through forest in various stages of regeneration as well as some upland fields. Ask the guide to tell you how we are working with the villagers to conservation and regenerate the forest. We’ll stop for a picnic lunch before arriving to Ban Namleu. From here, we return to Luang Nam Tha.

Approximately: 40 minutes transfer/ 5 hours trekking

Note: Nam Tha is best for rafting from July to November, for kayaking all year round
