Time for a little-off road and go deeper to an area which was heavily bombed during the Indochina War. We leave Luang Prabang and start in on a compacted dirt road that winds along a river. It gets steep and the views are fantastic. A simple lunch along the way keeps us going and dinner in Vieng Thong awaits.

It will be an exciting ride today! We head to Sam Neua for lunch and drop off our luggage at a guesthouse. We then go toward the Vietnamese border and the Vieng Xay caves for a scenic ride. The caves are known as 'Hidden City' and served as bomb shelters for the Pathet Lao leadership during the Indochina War. The caves have been opened not so long time ago to the public. We return to Sam Neua for overnight

After breakfast, we ride along isolated mountain areas and today’s destination is the Plain of Jars. This area is still heavily mined and remnants of the Indochina war can still be seen even though it ended long time ago. We explore Site 1 of the Plain of Jars and drive back to Phonsavan before dark. If there is time, we can visit the Information Center of MAG Laos, the Mine Advisory Group that operates UXO clearance in Xieng Khuang Province.

An early departure will be needed. The tough ride is taking you through remote areas and forests where villagers still live with little impact by modernization. River crossing is expected especially in the wet season. It’s hard to find a restaurant to eat. A simple lunch with sticky rice and laap will keep your fuel right. It’s a rugged ride and the night in Paksan Hotel will refresh you along with dinner at the river.

Today we follow the Road No 13. The ride is flat and comfortable on a well-paved road. We have a little off- road to the Tad Xay waterfall, a local tourist attraction amidst mixed deciduous and evergreen forest located inside the Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area. It is an idyllic place for bathing and relaxation before we return to Road No. 13 for the journey back to Vientiane.

It is highly recommended wearing proper protection while riding bikes in Laos like anywhere else.
All bikes come with a good performance helmet. However, your guide will at his discretion refuse any biker without adequate body equipment, depending of the chosen route.
In some instances (Rocky road, muddy dirt road, jungle ride, etc..) your guide will want you to wear complete protection gear.
Of course, you can bring along and use your own equipment but GDL can also provide you with a minimum protecting set that includes gloves, boots and upper body protection at a rate of 10 dollars per day.
Other equipment can also be hired on request. (Camel bags, goggles, rain jackets, off road jackets, etc…)
