Pha Ann Valley

Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area

This 2 days trek though the Phou Khao Khouy Protected Area takes us into the mountainous forest to see view from the top of the mountain. Camp near on the river; home stay in the Yao ethnic minority village; learn about animals, plants, trees and unique culture of the Yao minority in the valley and more…await!

Day1: Vientiane - Nam Mang – Camp Site 1Ban Pha Ann
Trip starts from Vientiane. We head south by pick up truck for 96 Km to Phou Khao Khouy National Protected Area. After packing we start trekking though the secondary forest up to the top of the mountain, where we can enjoy panoramic view of the park and a Lao style picnic lunch.

After lunch, 3 hours walking through the green forest and steep down hill of bamboo forest to the Nam Mang River leads to the camp site. There is time to refresh at the clean and cool stream on the way.

Approximately: 2 hours transfer/5 hours trekking

Day 2: Camp Site 1 - Camp Site 2
Wake up in the early in the morning, we have chance to see the birds, squirrels even monkeys. After breakfast, a bamboo raft will takes us across the river. On the other side of Nam Mang River, we start trekking for 6 hours up and down the bamboo and evergreen forest to the second camp site. A few stop will be made. Lunch will be served when ever you’re hungry.

Approximately: 6 hours trekking

Day 3: Camp Site 2 - Nam Mang - Ban Pha Ann
After early rise, 5 hours easy walk pass along the evergreen forest, rice fields, corn farms to Ban Pha Ann which is located in the heart of the valley and surrounded by the mountain where we will have home stay with Yao minority and learn about their culture and daily life.

Ban Pha AnnIn Laos there are two sub-groups of Yao: the Iumie and the smaller Laten. They are very similar in culture and language classified into the Miao-yao language group. They both have a written language using Chinese characters. Both Iumien and Lanten people have a complex combination of a sacred spiritual doctrine and a Tao doctrine of their ancestors that comes from Chinese influence. It is a mix of doctrine magic, Confucianism and history. There is also a belief of the more animistic spirits that are part of daily life. They believe in seven principal sprits that represent humans, animals, fields, forests, the sky, water and the earth and village. Yao society is strongly patriarchal. The husband and father have the final say.

Day4: Ban Pha Ann – Ban Naxay - Longxan - Vientiane
After breakfast, a tractor will take us along a dirt road for 3 hours to Ban Naxay, where the pick up truck awaits. We stop for lunch at the local restaurant at Longxan and then return to Vientiane by the afternoon.trekking

Approximately: 6 hours transfer

Note: This trip is only doable in the dry season (Oct to May)
