On this one day excursion by car or minivan from Vientiane to the Nam Ngum Reservoir we drive for ca. 100 km on the road No. 13. Along the way, we stop at a Hmong village, Ban Lak 54, to visit the market and meet the people. Next, you visit the archaeological site of Vang Xang which was built during the Mone-Khmer Empire between the 8th and 11th century.
We arrive at the Nam Ngum Reservoir at around noon time. Our lunch will be served at a boat restaurant on the lake.
We then embark for a boat ride to visit fishing villages on the small islands in the lake. On the way back to Vientiane, this time along Road No. 10, we stop a traditional salt abstraction site at Ban Keun and continue to Dong Makkhai market, now known for its large selection of insects, but where local people used to sell wild animals. We're back in Vientiane in the late afternoon.
Approximately: 3 ½ hours transfer/ 1 hour boat / 1 hour sightseeing
