Our favourite trek in the Nam Ha National Park. Explore the ancient forest, meet the villagers, and cross the river in your discovery of the national park. This great trip takes us through different remote villages, many of which can only be reached on foot. We spend the night in one of these villages and experience first hand the warmth and hospitality of rural life.

Luang Namtha

What Will You Do

Day 1: Discovering the Nam Ha NPA

Departing from Luang Namtha, we drive south into the Nam Ha Protected Area. We meet our local village guide after crossing the Nam Tha river by boat. Our guides can tell you about the local plants and animals as we hike up high into the mountains. Along the way to our campsite the local guides will show us how to collect wild herbs and vegetables for our dinner.

We will cook our foraged dinner on our campfire using tubes of bamboo, a cooking style unique to SouthEast Asia. After dinner fall asleep to the sounds of the forest, or go wildlife spotting with the help of our local guide.

Approximately: 60 minutes transfer/ 6 hours trekking

Day 2: Jungle life immersion and homestay

We wake up early to light the campfire for a hearty breakfast, giving us the energy we need to trek further into the forest.

Deep in the woods we’ll have a break for lunch. From here our local guide will return to his village as we carry on. As we approach the river, the forest changes to a wider variety of trees and plants  giving us a chance to fully immerse in the jungle. The guide will point out signs of more elusive wildlife, including bears, civets and wild boars which are present in the area.

Following a steep descent, we arrive either at the village where we will spend the night. Our local hosts will prepare dinner in a “rural style” whilst you take time to swim and bathe in the river. After dinner we have time to explore the village and meet some of the locals with our guide who will explain life in the village.

Approximately: 6-7 hours trekking

Day 3: a journey to the best views

Again we get up early and have breakfast in the village before enjoying a relatively gentle walk along the river and through rice paddies. We then enter the jungle once again to trek to our lunch spot. Lunch will be provided for us by Khmu villagers at a fantastic viewpoint with incredible vistas across the valley. We can take this moment to appreciate how far we have walked!

After lunch, we make our last descent down from the mountains to a small village, where our transport is waiting to take us back to Luang Namtha.

Approximately: 6 hours trekking/ 25 minutes transfer

What to expect:

Expect full days of hiking up and down hill on uneven paths. Accommodation in the village is quite rustic with washing facilities that are very basic and not very private. We can not guarantee that we will see wildlife on this tour. Specially in dry season, the weather may be hot.

We have water refillable station at our office where you can fill up your bottle.  If you don’t have one we sell the 0,75 L Green Discovery aluminium bottles at our sales office.  At the moment we will still need to use plastic bottles in some of our tours but we hope to reduce it as much as possible. Together with The Green Discovery Sustainability Fund we are working on installing water filters in all the villages we are visiting and we hope in the future we will not need to use plastic bottles anymore.
