Cycle trip to hill tribes around Nong Khiaw

GDL-Nong-Khiaw-cycle-31Hit the tracks and enjoy some brilliant biking! You will see untouched Laos as you really get away from the tourist trail. This one day trip explores the remote villages and stunning landscapes.

Approximately: 3-4 hours cycling, 1 hour boating

Day 1: Nong Khiaw > Na Luang > Phayong > Sop Khan > Nong Khiaw

GDL-Nong-Khiaw-trek-village-4We set off from our office and cycle along a paved road for 6km before turning off and hitting the dirt which is where the adventure really begins! The track is carved out of the mountain side and offers not only great riding but some  mazing panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, valleys and forests.

As we continue we pass through several villages of various different ethnic groups including Thai Lu, Khmu, Lao and Hmong. We take some time to visit the  villages along the way and interact with the people who live there as we learn  about their way of life. Near Ban Phayong Village we stop at a small stream where we enjoy a local picnic lunch which is served on banana leaves.

GDL-Nong-Khiaw-Muang-Ngoi-boat-tripAfter our lunch we take a break before getting back on the bikes and continuing onwards to Ban Sop Khan. This ethnic Lao village sits on the banks of the Nam Ou River and is where after taking some time to look around we board a boat. The boat journey ends our day as we leisurely cruise down the Ou River which passes through some of the steepest most beautiful mountains in Northern Laos before arriving back in Nong Khiaw.

Approximately: 3-4 hours cycling, 1 hour boating

During the wet season the tracks get very muddy especially after heavy rain which can make the cycling more difficult/fun dependant on how you look at it.
