Complete Nam Ha Experience

GDL-Activities-23This trip takes us through three Lanten and two Khmu villages before the trail leads us through the forest area which borders the Nam Ha Protected Area. On day two we cross over the Nam Ha River and cut through the dense forest which is abundant with wildlife. On the trip we will learn about traditional agricultural practices and the uses of the forest.

(2 days trek, 1 day kayak)

Day 1: Luang Namtha > Ban Jaluensouk > Ban Nalan > Ban Nam Goy

The trek begins in the Khmu village of Ban Jaluensouk. The trail from Ban Jaluensouk leads us up to the ridge line and through forest in various stages of regeneration as well as some upland rice paddies. The guide will tell you about how we are working with the villagers to conserve and regenerate the forest. As we continue along the trail we will see the villagers coming to and from the market. As we continue onwards the trail descend down to the village of Ban Nalan Tai which sits on the banks of the Nam Ha river. From here we shall continue onwards to either Ban Nam Goy or Ban Nalan Tai. We alternate each trip between the villages in order to share the benefits between the two villages. If we are staying in Ban Nam Goy we continue down the river bank for a further 40 minutes.
Approximately: 30 minutes transfer & 5 to 6 hours trekking

Day 2: Ban Nam Goy > Ban Hat Yawng

After enjoying breakfast we continue through the forest and along the banks of the Nam Ha river. This area is home to deer and monkeys, if we walk quietly we may catch a glimpse of them! We carry onwards until lunchtime where we stop to enjoy a picnic in the jungle with some villagers. After lunch we cross the Nam Ha River via bamboo raft and enter the Nam Ha National Protected Area. Here the trail takes us through dense jungle before we follow  a stream. As we continue onwards you will notice signs of the abundant wildlife in the area and if lucky, we may even see some. We continue over a ridge which passes through rice paddies before reaching the banks of the Nam Tha river. We cross the river via a canoe to Ban Hat Yawng where we spend the night.

Approximately: 5 hours trekking

Day 3: Ban Hat Yawng > Ban Hat Nalaeng > Luang Namtha

On the final day we kayak down the Nam Tha River, which flows through a landscape of farmers fields and small but numerous ethnic villages. The trip finishes at the Khmu village of Ban Hat Nalaeng.

From here Ban Hat Nalaeng we return back to Luang Namtha either via longtail boat or minibus. The return by river is in a traditional longtail boat  which is operated by the local villagers. On the way up the river you will see many different types of birds along the banks of the river as we pass along the border of the Nam Ha Protected Area. If returning via minibus  the road may be a little rough and a dusty.

Approximately: 2 hours transfer via minibus or boat and 4 to 5 hours kayaking

Note Return via boat may not be possible from March to June and a return via minibus may not be possible from July to September.
