Nam Ha Valley Trekking

GDL Luang Namtha Trek VillageOur favorite moderate trekking in the Nam Ha notional Park. Explore the primary forest, meet the villagers, cross the Nam Ha River on a bamboo raft and discover the Nam Ha National Protected Area.  This trip takes us through three Lanten Villages and two Khmu villages which can only be accessed by foot or by boat.

(2 days trek, all seasons)

During this fantastic trip we see some beautiful natural scenery and enjoy the hospitality and food of the villagers as we visit three Lanten and two Khmu villages. We follow a trail which climbs a ridge near the Nam Ha River before heading in to the forest and onwards to where we spend the night in either Ban Nam Goy or Ban Nalan Tai. On day two the trail crosses the Nam Ha River before cutting through a section of ancient forest which is abundant with wildlife! After we emerge from the forest we pass through rice paddies before crossing the Nam Tha River to Ban Hat Yawng from where we return back to Luang Namtha.

Day 1: Luang Namtha- Ban Jaluensouk - Ban Nalan Tai - Ban Nam Goy

Nam Ha Valley Trekking Village North LaosThe trek starts at Ban Jaluensouk a Khmu village. From here we follow a trail which leads us up to the ridge. We continue along the trail which passes through forest and upland rice fields. The guide will tell you how we are working together with the villagers to conserve and regenerate the forest. As we continue along the trail we will meet local villagers coming and going to market before descending down to Ban Nalan Tai village which is located on the banks of the Nam Ha river. In order to distribute the benefit between villagers each trip alternates the overnight stay between Ban Nam Goy and Ban Nalan Tai and Ban Nam Goy. If we stay at Ban Nam Goy we shall continue walking along the river bank for a further 40 minutes.
Approximately: 30minutes transfer & 5 to 6 hours trekking

Day 2: Ban Nam Goy - Ban Hat Yawng  Luang Namtha

Nam Ha Valley Trekking North LaosAfter enjoying breakfast we head off through the forest to the banks of the Nam Ha river. Deer and monkeys live in this area so if we walk quietly and luck is on our side we may catch a glimpse of them! We continue onwards until lunchtime where we meet with the villagers in the forest and enjoy a picnic together. After lunch we cross the Nam Ha River via bamboo raft and enter the Nam Ha National Protected Area. Here the trail follows a stream through dense jungle, you will see the signs of the abundant wildlife in the area and lucky, we may even see some. As we continue walking them forest opens up and heads through rice paddies before reaching the banks of the Nam Tha river. Here we cross via a wooden canoe to Ban Hat Yawng.

From the village we return to Luang Namtha either via traditional longtail boat which is operated by the locals or alternatively minibus. If choosing to return via boat you will see many different types of birds along the banks of the river. If you choose to return by minibus the road is a little rough and dusty but offers some great views.

Approximately: 5 to 6 hours trekking and 1.5 hours boat or 1 hour minibus transfer

Return via boat/Minibus: Return by boat may not be possible from March- June and return by minibus may not be possible July-September.
