The 'Phou Khao Khouay' National Park
Close to Vientiane and easily accessible, this 2000 km² national park invites for various tours into the wilderness, be it for trekking, wildlife watching, orchid spotting, kayaking and cycling, or just relaxing under beautiful waterfalls amidst lush green vegetation.
The park offers a variety of contrasting landscapes and natural beauty, from evergreen dipterocarp forest to large pine tree stands to extensive bush land and bamboo groves, from sandstone plateaus to steep rough mountain slopes. Wildlife is abundant but highly elusive, with larger animals like elephants, bears, deer, and monkeys still roaming through the often dense vegetation.
Though there is almost no village inside the park, true Lao rural life can be experienced by visiting some communities right at the edge of the park.
Enjoy a trek through lush forest and explore the many orchids the inexperienced eye may not be able to spot and to identify. Start your trip at Ban Hatkhai in the south-eastern part of the Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area. Spend most of the time in one of the prime areas of the park. Visit Tad Xay and Pha Xay waterfalls and trek through lush forest with beautiful waterfalls inviting you for a refreshing swim. Overnight homestay in local village. On day two enjoy hiking and the beautifull Tad Sang (Elephant Waterfall).
This 3 day trek is designed for those who like to be immersed in nature, enjoy wildlife observation and look forward to camping in the forest and cooking the forest products. Traversing the Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area, the trail follows all the time the Nam Leuk River. The trek starts at the Tad Leuk Waterfall in the southeast of the National Park and ends at the southern tip of of the Ang Nam Leuk Reservoir.
A longer version of the Phou Khao Khouay Challenge, maybe not as demanding as the one day. This 2 day tour is nevertheless for the sportive kind who will challenge the trails of the national park by trekking, kayaking, and cycling. The friendly village of Ban Hatkhai where you will staying over night is a good place to learn more about the genuine lifestyle of the lowland Lao.

The National Protected Area of Phou Khao Khouay is the nearest National Park to Vientiane. Besides some great scenery and beautiful waterfalls, the NPA offers trails where tropical butterflies and orchids line the way through forests that are home to rare large mammals such as Sun Bear, Tiger and Elephants.
