This trek passing through great jungle landscape offers a great opportunity to gain a true insight into the rural life and landscape of the local villagers. Trek across rice paddies, farm land and jungle forest and experience the true natural beauty of Luang Prabang Province. Enjoy home-stay or camp on the riverbank to experience real insight into the culture of ethnic minorities or nature before enjoying the second day kayaking to the holy Pak Ou cave filled with Buddha statues!

Day 1: Luang Prabang – Huay Leun – Pha Theung – Ban Hadkhor

We depart from Luang Prabang at 8:30AM on a local Songtheow truck heading north for Ban Hadkhang then to Huay Leun, which takes us approximately 1.5 hours. Once in the village, we begin our trek through local farms and vegetation which is getting gradually replaced by dense jungle.

We immerse into the beauty and diversity of the local flora and fauna. It is like venturing into another world under tempthe canopy of huge trees with orchids, ferns, creepers and more. The delightful sounds of abundant birdlife add to the unique atmosphere in this wonderful forest.

A Lao style picnic lunch will be prepared at a beautiful spot in the jungle. For the next one and a half hours we continue trekking through a bamboo forest before it is going downhill and farming plots determine now the landscape along the Nam Ou river. We cross the river on a longtail boat to reach the Tai Lue village on the other side where a local family will be our host for the night.

Approximately 2.5 hours transfer (round trip) and 4-5 hours trekking

Day 2: Ban Hadkhor – Pak Ou Cave – Ban Xang Hai – Luang Prabang

GDL Activities 22 220x146

We get up early in the morning to chill out for a while in the fresh air of the rising day. After breakfast, the guide will give you a short introduction to the basics of kayaking and safety instructions. We then head off downstream and will soon meet the first easy rapids!

Along the way on the Nam Ou, we pass majestic steep cliffs and villages almost untouched by modern civilization. We paddle further downstream until pausing for a delicious picnic lunch at one of the most scenic of locations, a beautiful white sandbank amidst really amazing surroundings!

After lunch we have some time for a relaxing break and swim in the cool waters of the river. The afternoon is spent paddling in a calmer section of the Nam Ou and on the Mekong. Along the way you have the opportunity to watch villagers while fishing and harvesting river weeds which they process into a tasty snack by drying, seasoning and frying! It is also a must to stop at the famous Pak Ou (Buddha) Cave to see the hundreds of Buddha statues, small and big in this culturally and historically significant cave!

We continue paddling down the Mekong and make a stop at a weaving and Lao whisky making village. After a short stopover here it’s going on for another 30 minutes down to Pak Xeung where ourtruck or “Songtheow” is waiting to pick us up and drive us back to Luang Prabang.
