Mekong Life

GDL-Champassak-4000-islands-1-6Go down the mighty Mekong via kayak and see the life of local people along the riverside. Visit the famous Wat Phou archeological site and kayak onwards to Don Deng island for some cycling. A great trip to discover the Mekong and its surrounding area.

(2 days kayaking and cycling, all seasons)

Day 1: Pakse > Don Deng

We depart from our office in Pakse take a short transfer to the Mekong river, from here we embark via kayak down the river and along the rim of Phou Salou and Nang Maloung Mountains. Along the way we will witness the daily lives of the villagers as we see them fishing, bathing and going about their daily tasks along the river. We carry on kayaking until arriving near a small temple built by the local villagers, we take a short walk uphill to the temple which rewards us with panoramic views of Sipandon (4000 islands) and the surrounding mountains, this is also where we shall enjoy a picnic lunch together.

After lunch we continue on kayaking downstream which takes us through a section of small yet exciting rapids until arriving in Don Dang. Arriving on the island we take some time to play around on the sandy beach and enjoy a game of volleyball or football/soccer. From the beach you can see the distant Linga mountain range in neighboring Cambodia. After enjoying our time at the beach we stay the night at Don Deng Island in either a home stay or eco lodge.

Approximately: 4 or 5 hours kayaking dependant on season, 10 minutes transfer

Day 2: Don Deng > Wat Phou > Champassak > Tomo Temple - Pakse

Mekong-Life-Kayaking-2After enjoying breakfast we visit a nearby village which is famous for Kaolam, a mixture of stick rice and coconut milk cooked in a bamboo tube. As we walk to the village we will see the monks as they walk around the island collecting food which is offered by the local people. Continuing onwards we then cross the river to Champassak, from here we cycle onwards to Wat Phou where we spend some time to explore the fascinating historic temple which is a UNESCO World heritage site! After spending some time at the temple we return back to Champassak where we enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

After enjoying our food and taking some time to relax we head onwards to the village of Ban Mouang, from here we transfer to the Tomo Temple via a Tuk Tuk and ferry for a visit. We take some time to explore the fascinating Tomo Temple after which we return back to Pakse, a journey of around three hours.
